Frustrated with the lack of information on female experts working in behavioral science, last Autumn, Darcie Piechowski (Global Performance & Career Strategy Leader at IBM) put a call out on LinkedIn to connect with other female behavioural scientists. The response to the post was positive with many expressing their eagerness to connect and echoing their frustration with the information gap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, Darcie Piechowski set up the Women in Behavioural Science Community<\/mark><\/a> on LinkedIn, and the group is now thriving with over 900 members worldwide. It is an inclusive and interesting space which welcomes women from various backgrounds including, psychology students, academics, behavioural science practitioners and corporate leaders.  In this space, women share the latest research, thought provoking articles, interviews and events. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding the value of inclusivity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may all intrinsically understand the notion of inclusion, but this does not necessarily translate to the transformation required. It has been recognised<\/mark><\/a> that an intersectional approach is needed to ensure inclusion is truly achieved. Despite this, the barriers that individuals of differing identities face \u2014  whether through systemic or personal bias \u2014  often go unchallenged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behavioural science has the power to go to the heart of issues and dismantle inequality, to cultivate sustainable change. Studies have demonstrated that a diverse workforce leads to an increase in inn<\/mark><\/a>ovation and creativity<\/mark><\/a> and an increase in financial performance<\/mark><\/a>. This shows inclusion and diversity lead to a stronger workforce and for behavioural science – better science. Many female researchers have contributed work that is representative, valuable and visible, but there is still bias<\/mark><\/a> and plenty more to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in a world where information is instant, and challenges such as climate change, advancements in technology and health pandemics are now the new normal, ensuring that everyone\u2019s needs are understood and supported is vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s just not hear it from the boys! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So today as you go about your day, give a shout out to a female colleague, make a promise to deepen your understanding of inclusion, get inspired and inspire, create that movement of change that makes a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be that intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
