A Welshman with an English accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How did you get into Behavioural Science?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By accident. I Kind of fell into it via chemistry, commercial marketing, fundraising research, football supporter studies, direct and database marketing, and promoting sport and exercise research. Chaotic career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are you working on right now?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>20mph default [with exceptions!] in Wales with you guys; Active Travel [my first love]; and some lovely interesting stuff on culture change with the true heroes of health &#8211; the Directors of Public Health<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do you like most about what you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That it means something. I am absolutely committed every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What role is there for communications in changing behaviour?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of things. We point stuff out, promote something tangible, create excitement. Long term, we can change cultures. But that takes decades and millions of pound notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you could work\/research any topic what would it be and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building a &#8216;brand&#8217; for cycling and cyclists. And exposing the dark side &#8211; the populist, post-truth and polarising press on anything they deem as anti-car. War on the motorist? Don&#8217;t be stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your favourite behavioural science paper\/book\/resource and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herbert Simons\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/mono\/10.4324\/9780203933039\/persuasion-society-herbert-simons\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Persuasion in Society<\/mark><\/em><\/a>. Genius<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who do you think is interesting in the general field?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I get inspired by lots of people but a special mention to Sharyn Rundle Thiele and Gerard Hastings who have influenced me&nbsp;enormously in the last 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What haven\u2019t we asked you that we should have?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s my indoor 60m hurdles personal best\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Editor\u2019s note : Alan\u2019s best is 7.96s which \u201cwasn\u2019t bad at the time\u201d and was ranked 9th on the all-time list for a period.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who is one person that we can speak to for our next interview and if you could ask them one question, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked one hero in my life [my better half, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/JanePowell\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Prof Jane Powell<\/mark><\/a>] to help me meet another hero [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tracy_Daszkiewicz\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Tracy Daszkiewicz<\/mark><\/a>, Director of Public Health of Wiltshire during the Salisbury poisonings crisis]. I met Tracy a few weeks ago and was star struck. Maybe Jane could get you an audience!
