as he finally completed the long-awaited takeover of Twitter last week.<\/p><h4><b>What you need to know:<\/b><\/h4><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South African businessman has <\/span><b>long criticised Twitter\u2019s content moderation policies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, calling Twitter\u2019s decision to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/americas\/20220428-elon-musk-s-criticism-of-twitter-staff-sparks-backlash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">remove a New York Post article<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about President Biden\u2019s son Hunter Biden earlier this year as \u201cincredibly inappropriate\u201d.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activists, politicians and users <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/oct\/28\/elon-musk-twitter-moderation-council-free-speech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have all<\/span><\/span><\/a> <b>voiced concerns that Musk\u2019s ownership of Twitter will result in rampant misinformation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and identity-based hate on the platform, but it\u2019s worth noting the platform was already struggling to get to grips with this challenge before Musk\u2019s purchase.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musk has tried to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1585619322239561728?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1585619322239561728%7Ctwgr%5E79944f7da39866308bea9912807011e27bbaebc6%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Ftechnology%2F2022%2Foct%2F28%2Felon-musk-twitter-moderation-council-free-speech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ease the anxiety of advertisers<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>reassuring them that Twitter won\u2019t become a \u2018free-for-all hellscape\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although initial signs show the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/28\/technology\/twitter-far-right-followers.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">follower count of far-right<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> users already beginning to surge.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musk has already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/27\/twitter-elon-musk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fired top-executives<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the social media giant, whom he had<\/span><b> previously called out for what he considered to be misleading information<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the prevalence of bots on the platform.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Brands are already showing signs of nervousness<\/b> about Musk\u2019s ownership of the platform, with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/28\/gm-temporarily-suspends-advertising-on-twitter-following-elon-musk-takeover.html\">General Motors the first to pause advertising<\/a>.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><div><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div><h4><b>What people are saying:<\/b><\/h4><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk: \u201cThe reason I acquired Twitter is because it\u2019s important to the future of civilization to have a common town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence. There is currently a great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society\u201d.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thierry Breton, EU industry chief: \u201cIn Europe, the bird will fly by our rules&#8221;.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><h4><b>Why it matters:<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of tensions at the heart of Musk\u2019s vision, and the coming weeks and months will give us more information on how the chips will fall.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, Musk &#8211; in his statement to advertisers &#8211; claimed his main goal was to address rising polarisation. The problem? One of the main drivers of this polarisation is precisely that which makes platforms money from advertisement: their content recommendation algorithms. These are the pieces of code which decide what content we see at the top of our news feed, and are responsible for keeping us hooked to the platform.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the debate has been around who Musk lets onto the platform. Yet if Musk wanted to depolarise Twitter, one of the best things he could do is alter the content recommendation system of the platform to stop promoting outrageous content. A noble pursuit; but this would also blow a hole right through his own pocket.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, the challenge of prioritising free speech vs safety of users doesn\u2019t have a solution \u2013 it\u2019s a balance. Musk\u2019s vision for a platform that isn\u2019t a \u201chellscape\u201d but also welcomes a \u201cwide range of beliefs\u201d is already hitting reality, as radical users begin to test the waters of how far the platform is willing to let them go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/28\/gm-temporarily-suspends-advertising-on-twitter-following-elon-musk-takeover.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">General Motors\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suspension of advertising is another area where Musk\u2019s vision is potentially in tension with what\u2019s profitable.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h4><b>What to watch:<\/b><\/h4><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>How the advertising industry will react<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to unfolding events at Twitter: will more brands join General Motors?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Who will return<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the platform: the U.S far-right in particular is itching to get back onto the platform, with big names like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene still banned for spreading misinformation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Who will be on the \u2018content moderation council\u2019?<\/b>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Musk\u2019s proposed solution to tough content moderation decisions isn\u2019t particularly new (Facebook has its own Oversight Board), but who will manage it?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>How will Musk manage \u2018diplomacy\u2019 with authoritarian states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Russia and China where he might have business interests that conflict with content moderation decisions?<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Is talk of a purge of staff genuine?<\/b>\u00a0And if so, what impact will gutting the platform\u2019s safety teams have on the spread of damaging and dangerous content from misinformation to child pornography?<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What happened: \u201cThe bird is freed\u201d.
